Granite, Quartz, Quartzite, Porcelain, Dekton or Soapstone?
There is no universally best countertop. The right choice depends on the appearance, maintenance, heat exposure, use and budget of your project.
Granite countertops
Granite is natural stone, so every slab has its own pattern, mineral character and variation. It is a strong choice for customers who want a natural surface rather than a manufactured pattern. Exact color, movement and fissures must be judged from the actual slab, not a small sample. Every piece is custom fit to your home.
Consider Granite when..
You value natural variation, durability and the ability to hand-select the exact slab. Ask about sealing, finish and daily care for the specific stone you choose.
Quartz countertops
Engineered Quartz offers more consistent patterns and generally low routine maintenance. It is popular for kitchens, vanities and work surfaces where customers want predictable color and broad design choices. Because it contains resin, direct high heat should still be managed carefully.
Consider Quartz when..
You want a consistent appearance, easy everyday care and many color choices without the natural variation found in stone.
Quartzite countertops
Quartzite is natural stone and can provide dramatic movement and depth. Similar-looking slabs can perform differently, so the stone should be properly identified and evaluated rather than selected by name alone. Layout planning matters when the slab has strong directional veining.
Consider Quartzite when..
You want the visual movement of natural stone and accept the particular slab’s characteristics and maintenance.
Porcelain countertops
Porcelain slabs provide a modern, large-format surface with strong resistance to heat, staining and UV exposure. The printed design may not run through the body, so edge construction and fabrication details affect the final appearance.
Consider Porcelain when..
You want a thin, modern surface or a material suitable for high heat and sunlight, and the chosen design works with the required edge treatment.
Dekton countertops
Dekton is an ultra-compact surface designed for heat, stain and UV resistance. It requires experienced handling and fabrication. Edge profiles, impact points, cutouts and installation details should be planned carefully.
Consider Dekton when..
You place a high value on heat and UV performance and want a modern manufactured surface installed by a fabricator familiar with the material.
Soapstone countertops
Soapstone has a soft, quiet appearance and develops a patina with use. It is nonporous, but it is softer than Granite or Quartzite and can scratch or show wear. Many owners consider that evolving character part of its appeal.
Consider Soapstone when..
You prefer a timeless natural surface and are comfortable with visible patina rather than expecting the countertop to remain visually unchanged.
Full slabs, remnants and mini slabs
Large kitchens commonly require one or more full slabs. Bathroom vanities, laundry rooms, bars and other smaller projects may fit an available remnant or mini slab. The correct choice depends on dimensions, vein direction, cutouts and usable material—not simply square footage. Our selection of Remnants can be found here.
